Top 5 Google Based FireFox Extensions

There are multiple top 10, top 20, top ‘so many’ lists of add-ons for our friendly giant browser Firefox. We decided to do what many of these add-ons itself do as a sole function: sort and filter information. Thus this is a list of 5 extensions for Firefox, released over the past months, but strictly only for Google and Gmail. Next we will do another subsection of FireFox add-ons, possibly Download enhancing ones; but for now check these basic bread and butter Google/Gmail enhancers.

Probably the most important add-on for us Indian users, this little gem allows us to type in Indian scripts, much more easily then actually installing separate language packs. Thus we have access to languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam etc. It works in Text Boxes and Gmail, Zoho Mail etc.






Inline Google definitions

This helps some of us users who are plain bad in English, or off course still learning the language, which is a never ending process. You can get the definition, or meaning of any term by selecting it, and then right clicking and choosing inline definition from the right click menu. A small window opens up there itself with Thesaurus style explanations. It’s quite a useful tool for techies or anyone researching something new on the web, it also does proper nouns and multiple words, or at least attempts to give a citation from Wiki about the same.

Better Gmail 2

This one is for pimping Gmail, as the name quite directly suggests, and the current version stated is the latest. It is a culmination of previous releases all packaged into one little add-on with extensive options for making Gmail more friendly and cool. The first thing you notice is that it changes the attachment icon to the file type, thus you can see tiny word icons or MP3 icons on the side of your mail, rather than the boring paper clip icon. Besides , u can modify your signature, have folders to sort out the mail, create Keyboard macros etc. One point to note: its better if one selects ‘older version’ in their Gmail (top right corner) for full usage of the add-on.

Customize Google

This one again is a very useful add-on, meant to make Google search (among other things) a better experience. Firstly as you install the plugin, you need to click Customize Google options from the Firefox add on list, and spend a few quality minutes browsing through the various checkboxes available. For e.g. there are ways to remove ads, and also filter out certain nagging sites from your search results.

This one is for those who are plain bored of Google aesthetics, and would like a little colorful zing in their daily browsing. It might help in making our daily drudge at the work place a wee bit less depressing. This add-on uses CS style sheets that completely change the look and feel of Google and Google based services. Once installed , you have to click on a small Google Redesigned icon on the bottom right of the browser, and it downloads and updates style sheets to make Google look cooler.
